    中国为什么在转基因农作物的问题上,下如此大的功夫,科学家敢于冒这样大的风险,敢于走在其它国家的前头,说到底是为了多打粮食,解决十几亿人吃饭的问题。让我们做一个换位思考,假如中国有俄罗斯、美国、巴西甚至印度那么多耕地﹙印度有22亿亩耕地,人均耕地2.8亩,顺便说一句,中国人均耕地不到1.4亩﹚,那末,中国搞转基因农作物的积极性就要大打折扣。我不是盲目地反对搞转基因农作物的研究与试验,我是主张用人造土壤技术解决十几亿人吃饭的问题。因为有了耕地(例如40亿亩)就等于有了粮食(例如一年产粮10亿吨),手中有粮心中不慌,等转基因农作物食用的安全性得到证实后,再给老百姓吃,那不是更加稳妥吗。

    Why transgenic crops such as soybean and corn and rice have been greatly researched and developed in China and our scientists have dared to take the risks ahead of the other countries even India. In one word, we want to increase more and more grain production in order to solve the problem of food in China. Let’s say if China possessed cultivated land as much as Russia, America, Brazil even India (India has 2.2 billion mu of cultivated land and per capita 2.8 mu of cultivated farmland. By the way, Chinese per capita is lower than 1.4 mu), we would not have been so enthusiastic about transgenic food. I am not blindly against researching and developing transgenic crops, but I advocate popularization of artificial soil technology and development of artificial soil industry to solve the problem of Chinese food. If we have enough cultivated land (such as 4 billion mu of cultivated land), we will have enough grain (such as 1 billion tons of grain a year). If we have enough grain (such as 1 billion tons of grain a year), we will not be nervous about food shortage. We can wait till the security of transgenic food for human beings and animals has been proved completely. Will that be a better choice for the Chinese people?
